Just a year later, Beth got married again, to an ex-Navy petty officer named Frank Burroughs. Together, the three moved to Granbury, a city some 35 miles outside Fort Worth. But, even though Frank wanted to be a father figure to Marie, their home life was far from perfect.
As Marie grew older, her relationship with Beth became increasingly close. In fact, some commented that they were more like sisters than anything else. Meanwhile, Marie did well at school, particularly excelling in music, dance and art. Then, a week before her sixteenth birthday, everything changed.
Shockingly, Marie caught Frank red-handed with a different woman. Although Beth decided to stand by her husband, Marie refused to live with him. She left home, only to change her mind after five days. But Frank was strict. He’d previously said that if Marie ever moved out, she couldn’t return. Consequently, he turned Marie away at the door.
