Then, Hurricane Irma changed everything. The hurricane itself did not do tremendous damage to Barbados. In fact, the island was mostly spared from the worst of the storm. And one of the consequences of the storm was of great interest to surfers – big waves.
Because of the swell created by Hurricane Irma, unusually large waves were hitting Barbados’ coastline. Consequently, Venezia and some surfer friends visited a beach called Box by Box to take advantage of these waves. But that was to prove to be a fatal decision.
Venezia was out surfing when he was hit by a special type of wave called a closeout set. In essence, this is a peculiar circumstance when a wave crests and falls before it reaches the shore. It’s spectacular to look at, but can be dangerous for surfing in.
